Marnus Labuschagne carved out another Test century and, aided by 40s from David Warner and Steve Smith, helped Australia to a position of strength after the first day of the opening Test against New Zealand. Catch the second day’s play from 4pm AEDT live with The Roar.

On what looked like a good, solid pitch at Optus Stadium, Australia would be reasonably happy with the position they find themselves after Day 1. On a hot opening day in Perth, they might not have been over-attacking in their approach but to go to stumps at 4/248 gives them a sound footing for the rest of the Test match.

And they have Labuschagne to thank for that.

Having been brought into the Test XI as a concussion substitute for Steve Smith during the Ashes, he has grabbed hold of the number three spot by the scruff of its neck. For the third Test innings in a row, he showed why he’s rated so highly.

Walking out to bat after the early wicket of Joe Burns, Labuschagne showed all the confidence that any batsman would have had smeared all over his batting after back-to-back centuries. And that pulled him through to his third in as many knocks.

Take no credit away from the New Zealand bowlers, though. Four wickets on an opening day might not sound a lot but they toiled hard and were successful in a couple of things.

One, they didn’t allow Steven Smith to take advantage of an early spilled chance and dismissed him for 43. They also never allowed the run rate to get away from them, restricting Australia to just 2.75 runs an over on a good surface.

By comparison, the hosts scored at 3.67 and 4.63 RPO in their two innings against Pakistan.

New Zealand will want to use that pressure to pick up a couple of quick wickets on the second day. Another hour of wicketless bowling in the baking heat will force them into playing catch-up.

Unfortunately, things have been made considerably more difficult due to Lockie Ferguson’s injury. The debutant quick picked up a calf injury on Day 1 and has been ruled out of the rest of the Test.
