The final series at home to round out a long summer of cricket will see a women’s ODI series between Meg Lanning’s dominant Australian side and New Zealand. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage of Game 1 at the WACA from 1:20pm (AEDT).
Australia have had an excellent last six months in international cricket, and funnily enough, it all started against New Zealand when they comprehensively won a T20 series to start the summer.
They then went to Malaysia and beat Pakistan, before taking home the trophy from the World T20, before the WBBL and WNCL have kept the players entertained in a long summer.
This is their last commitments until the Ashes, and with spots on the line, the hosts will all be keen on big performances.
New Zealand, on the other hand, came up short in the semi-finals of the World T20 and lost to the Aussies during that tournament.
While they have talent in their side, consistency is lacking, and in the ODI format where there is less unpredictability from match to match, that could be on display even more so.
Still, it should give their solid batting line-up more time to work into an innings, which will mean the Aussie bowling attack, led by Megan Schutt and in-form all-rounder Ellyse Perry, need to be on the money from the word go.
Sarah Devine, Suzie Bates and Amy Satterthwaite are all exceptional players, and if the trio are able to bat well, then it’ll hand a chance for the bowling attack, led by Lea Tahuhu, to make in roads.
In saying that, they need early wickets to expose the Aussie batting. It’s a strong line-up, and when you consider Perry and Rachael Haynes are in the middle order after players like Alyssa Heally and Meg Lanning, New Zealand need wickets and need them regularly.
Still, that’s a facet they have struggled with, even when restricting runs, so it’s not hard to see why most pundits believe they will be out-classed in this series, particularly on a bowler-friendly WACA where Schutt, Perry and potentially the returning Lauren Cheatle should come into their own.
Prediction
Australia have had a great period, and should continue that here as they build for the Ashes. Expect them to pick up a solid win at the WACA to kick off this series.
Australia to go 1-0 up.
