Australia start the cricket summer proper at the Gabba today for the first Test against Pakistan. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 11am (AEDT).
Pakistan are seeking a rare win on Australian soil and face the ominous task of facing Steve Smith and David Warner, with both men playing in their first home Test since their ball-tampering bans.
Coach Justin Langer confirmed the rest of the XI on Tuesday, with Joe Burns joining Warner at the top of the order and Travis Head slotting into the middle order, joining Smith, Marnus Labuschagne and Matt Wade in the top six.
With Michael Neser to be 12th man and James Pattinson suspended for his abuse of Cameron Gannon, the bowling attack will comprise Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Lyon, a fearsome prospect for opposition teams on home soil.
Tim Paine will, of course, captain the team and take the wicketkeeping gloves.
Pakistan’s squad features three fast-bowling teenagers, 19-year-olds Muhammad Musa and Shaheen Shah Afridi, and 16-year-old Naseem Shah. Naseem has already been confirmed by skipper Azhar Ali to make his debut at the Gabba, making him the youngest player to play his first Test both in Australia and against Australia.
Ali was the star for Pakistan when the side last toured Australia, making 406 runs across three matches, and his experience and class will be crucial if the visitors are to break their 24-year run of Test defeats in the country.
More attention, however, will fall on 25-year-old Babar Azam. He’s been the shining star for Pakistan in white-ball cricket, and also produced an excellent 157 in a warm-up game against Australia A last week.
Despite his no.1 ranking in the T20 batting standings, and no.3 in ODIs, he hasn’t been able to consistently replicate that form in the longest format. The right-hander has scored just one century and 11 fifties in 21 Tests, and will need to improve on that record this series.
Prediction
This will certainly be a tough task for Pakistan. Despite pushing Australia close at the Gabba three years ago, thanks to a wonderful fourth-innings century from Asad Shafiq, they haven’t won a Test down under since 1995, and have been swept 3-0 in the last four series here.
Australia are coming off retaining the Ashes away from home for the first time since 2001, and have a bowling attack which will trouble the Pakistan order. If they get runs from the entire top six, and not just Warner and Smith, they’ll be far too strong.
