After a day in the field, Australia will get a chance to go to work with the bat on Day 2 against Pakistan at the Gabba. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage of all the action from 11am (AEDT).
They say you should never judge a pitch until both teams have had a chance to bat on it, but this Gabba wicket looks like one where a lot more than 240 runs should have been scored by the tourists.
And that looked like it was going to be the case when they were 0/75 at one point in the second session, albeit batting along at a slow clip with Azhar Ali and Shan Masood guiding the ship.
Pakistan would then crumble in a heap, losing 5 for 19, eventually slumping to be all out in the final minutes of the day’s play for 240, which is a very good day’s work for the Aussie pace battery.
The pitch, while possessing good pace, bounce and carry, is one which runs can be scored on once a batsman is in, and it appeared, judging by the Pakistani innings, that while starting was difficult, run scoring wasn’t with a bit of patience and control.
240 is an awkward score though, and Australia will need a big first innings lead, given they have to bat last on a track which is likely to take turn for Yasir Shah in the fourth innings.
For that reason, David Warner and Joe Burns need to get things off to a good start for the Aussies, while Steve Smith, as always holds the key to a good total.
Pakistan’s pace attack will have moments of brilliance though. Leaving out Mohammad Abbas was an odd call, but it gives them speed and pace with Naseem Shah, Imran Khan Jr and Shaheen Afridi bowling alongside spinner Yasir.
Yasir needs to be better than he was last time in Australia, but it comes down to what the fast bowlers can produce, and if that isn’t consistency on good lengths like the Australians bowled yesterday, then they could be in for a long day.
In saying that, a lack of patience and any complacency could bring the Aussies undone, who will be more than happy they didn’t have to bat yesterday.
It gives Warner and Burns the chance to start properly, and you’d think, given the inexperience of the Pakistan attack and the conditions, that Australia will be well in front of the game by the time stumps rolls around.
