Australia get a chance to take a stranglehold on their series against South Africa when they continue their first innings today in the Boxing Day Test. Join The Roar for live scores and rolling coverage of the second day’s play from 10:30am (AEDT).
Pat Cummins’ decision to send South Africa in looked flawed early on Boxing Day, with South Africa reaching 1/56 in the lead-up to lunch. However, some poor shot selection, wonderful fielding and persistent bowling had South Africa four down and in trouble at the first break.
After a superb Marcus Labuschagne catch shortly after lunch, Kyle Verreynne and Marco Jansen went about repairing the South African innings. They put on 112 for the sixth wicket; however, when Verreynne fell for 52, the wheels fell off. Jansen top scored with 59, but a score of 189 continues the Proteas’ run of scores below 200.
Cameron Green took his first Test five-wicket haul with figures of 5/27. The South Africans were bundled out for 189, losing their last five wickets for just ten runs.
After a solid start in return, Australia lost Usman Khawaja when the score was on 21. Australia advanced to 45 at the close, with David Warner and Labuschagne undefeated at stumps.
Day 2 is going to be pivotal. If South Africa’s pace attack can make inroads, honours could be even after two days. However, if Australia get away, they could well be setting up themselves for a rare home series win over the Proteas.
