Ten wickets to Pat Cummins delivered victory for Australia in the first Test against Sri Lanka, with the win only taking three days to achieve.
Final score
Australia 323
Sri Lanka 144 and 139
Australia appear destined for victory as the first Test against Sri Lanka resumes at the Gabba on Day 3. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of Day 3, starting from 2pm AEDT.
Pat Cummins’ last ball of the day to dismiss Dimuth Karunaratne perfectly encapsulated the theme of day two at the ‘Gabba.
Unlike the Border-Gavaskar series, the Warne-Muralitharan series has been Australia all the way, Sri Lanka still yet to find an opportunity to at least arrest some of the momentum their way.
The visitors currently trail by 162 runs with nine wickets in hand, which going by the context of this match is a substantial deficit.
Sri Lanka’s best batsman on this tour, young Kusal Mendis, will need to make a sizeable contribution if his team wants to make any inroads into this game.
Skipper Dinesh Chandimal is also due for some runs, and the two Silvas, Roshen and Dananjaya, also need to raise their hand and make Australia toil long and hard in the field today.
It won’t be easy though, as the Aussies will have their tails up brimming with confidence, as they hunt for some long overdue success in the Test arena.
I believe Nathan Lyon will have a role to play today, and it was impressive to see him get some brilliant bite and grip off this ‘Gabba surface.
This is in sudden contrast to his Sri Lankan counterpart Dilruwan Perera, who mysteriously was unable to extract the same amount sharp turn and bounce like Lyon.
Sri Lanka will look to bat out the whole day with at least a few wickets in hand, so don’t be surprised if runs flow at a trickle.
The visitors’ wicket-keeper Niroshan Dickwella may provide a few fireworks at the end though if he gets going.
In closing, my prediction is that it will most likely be another day of Australian dominance with Sri Lanka batting tentatively against the seaming and swinging pink ball. I hope I’m wrong though.
