The T20 leg of the Australian summer begins with Australia facing off against two-time champions West Indies in a two-match T20 series in Queensland. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 7:10pm (AEST).
In some sensational news, Shimron Hetmyer has been dropped from the West Indies squad for this series and the T20 World Cup. The reason? For missing his flight twice. While the West Indies will miss Hetmyer’s services as a floater, they have made the right decision to ensure no one is above the team.
Shamarh Brooks, who scored 241 runs in eight innings in the recent edition of the Caribbean Premier League, has replaced Hetmyer in the squad.
Overall, the West Indies will be banking on the likes of Brandon King and Kyle Mayers to continue their great form from the CPL to give West Indies a fast start in the powerplay and let their middle order express themselves without fear in the latter half with the bat.
With the ball, left-arm spinner Akeal Hosein will enjoy the slower surface at Gold Coast. However, don’t count out express quick Alzarri Joseph to blast the Aussie bats with his raw speed. Joseph comes into this series having been the leading wicket-taker in the 2022 CPL (18 wickets at 15.00, 6.75 economy).
For Australia, Marcus Stoinis has been ruled out of the T20 series due to a side strain. The all-rounder will remain in Perth to continue his recovery and hopefully be fit for the T20 World Cup.
For all-rounder Cameron Green, that gives him another golden opportunity to push his case for a spot in Australia’s T20 World Cup squad should Stoinis not recover in time for the global tournament.
David Warner is back in the Australia T20 squad and will slot back into the opener’s spot alongside skipper Aaron Finch. With the ball, Australia will want their death bowling to be a lot better after the Indian bats toyed with the Aussie bowlers.
Prediction
Australia start favourites and deservedly so. West Indies are still in rebuilding mode following an exodus of senior players to retirement. The visitors get some great match practice before their T20 World Cup campaign as they will want to finalise their World Cup XI by the end of the series.
While T20 is a fickle format where anyone can win on a given day, you would still expect Australia to get the job done.
