Australia and the West Indies meet in the opening Test of their two match series at Optus Stadium in Perth. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 1:20pm (AEDT).

With the white-ball matches done and dusted for now, an improving West Indies team arrives down under to test themselves against an Australian red-ball team looking to get back to winning ways.

After series wins against both England and Bangladesh at home in 2022, the tourists will feel they have a real chance of competing with the Australians for the first time in what seems a long while.

Kemar Roach returns as a veteran fast bowler, seemingly getting better with age; Jayden Seales has made an impressive start to his Test career, and Alzarri Joseph looks a bowler of immense speed and promise. Roston Chase has guile as a spin-bowling option and Tagenarine Chanderpaul, Kraigg Brathwaite and Kyle Mayers loom as key men with the bat for the Windies.

Despite talk around the potential retirement of David Warner, he will front up for yet another series on home soil, with Marnus Labuschagne and a rejuvenated Steve Smith ever-present and likely to inflict some pain on the West Indian bowling at some stage of the series.

Much chatter has taken place around the media talk involving former coach Justin Langer, and captain Pat Cummins may well need to be ready for some vocal Western Australian fans, who potentially see him as the cause of Langer’s downfall.

Mitchell Starc will have his eyes on significant milestones during the series and Nathan Lyon will be back on the national scene after biding his time as the white ball matches played out. Usman Khawaja will do the same and Travis Head will have another opportunity to cement his place in the team for the busy Test schedule ahead.

The weather looks set to be intense for the opening day of the Test, and with some potential cracking in the surface likely, the toss could well be important, in a match where grave concerns exist around the number of people actually keep to attend it.

Prediction

Whilst there has been much talk around the improvement in the West Indian Test team, the Aussies should expose what still looks a flaky top order and, should they be able to combat the Windies quicks, open the series with a comfortable win.
