Australia are after wickets as they take to the field against the West Indies on an Optus Stadium wicket not offering much to either bowling attack. Join The Roar for live scores from 1:20pm (AEDT).

The West Indies should see day 3 as one for them to capitalise on. Largely thanks to debutant Tagenarine Chanderpaul (47 not out), accompanied by the experienced captain Kraigg Brathwaite (18 not out), the Windies finished on 0/74 at stumps on day 2. They are now in a position to consolidate and bat for long periods, which they’ll need to do to force a ddraw.

The Australian bowlers will be relentless in their pursuit of wickets. The much-talked-about pace trio Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and captain Pat Cummins will of course be difficult to combat, but I believe it’s Nathan Lyon that holds the key to day 3 and for the rest of the match.

Australia probably wants to only bat once with such a big score on the board. Lyon will be bowling from one end keeping it tight, allowing the pace bowlers to rotate from the other end. The off-spinner has a great record at Perth Stadium – he’s currently the leading wicket-taker at this venue, with 14 wickets at an average of 15.5. All other off-spinners have got six wickets at an average of 86.

The same with any Test match, the first hour will be crucial. If Chanderpaul and Brathwaite can still be there after the first hour, the partnership will continue to grow and the Windies can get themselves back into the game.

However, on the flip side, if Australia get quick wickets and Lyon finds his groove, the hosts could eye an early finish.
