With the likes of Steve Smith and David Warner absent from the Australian setup for the past 12 months for well-documented reasons, the 2019 Allan Border Medal had the potential to become an award an outsider could claim this time around.

Unfortunately, no one with the exception of one Australian cricketer has been able to put together performances worthy of claiming such an award.

Pat Cummins has been the standout cricketer in recent times, meaning he has arguably become Australia’s most valuable player in the Test arena.

His ability to bowl quick and accurate has seen him become one of the world’s best bowlers. Whenever Australia need a wicket, he is the go-to man for Tim Paine.

His batting should not go under the radar either. His technique allows to play any format of the game. He can bat long periods of time, but also score when required.

Cummins’ fielding is also an aspect of his game which is at the highest level now. He very much is a complete cricketer, as we have seen in recent times.

Nathan Lyon has also been as consistent as ever, continuing to bowl with threat every time he is called upon, which probably makes him the second favourite behind Cummins for the medal.

If Cummins claims the Allan Border Medal, and he should, no one can question whether he deserves it or not.

It is a shame though more could not perform at the level Cummins has been in recent times, especially when one considers the absence of Smith and Warner.

You certainly do not play for the individual accolades, but many of the Australian boys will feel they have missed an opportunity to make history by winning the prestigious medal.

There will be plenty more awards handed out over the course of the night which will be covered on this blog, also.

Prediction
I believe I have made it clear already, but just to reiterate, it really is difficult to look past Cummins on this occasion.

He has taken his game to another level and is really the only standout Australian cricketer over the past season.

Cummins to claim the Allan Border Medal comfortably.
