The eighth edition of the BBL will get underway at the Gabba as the Brisbane Heat try to throw the doubters off against defending champions the Adelaide Strikers. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 7:15pm (AEDT).
The Heat come into the new season with plenty of questions over the side and what their potential is.
What we do know about Brisbane is their batting line-up should be able to handle the doubters, and on their day, they will win games off the stick.
Led by bash brothers Brendon McCullum and Chris Lynn, who are two of the biggest hitters in the world, they also have plenty of other run scoring potential and at the Gabba in particular, should be consistently able to rack up 180 or more.
Joining the duo will be players like youngster Max Bryant, who burst onto the scene in this year’s JLT Cup, all-rounder Ben Cutting, Jimmy Peirson and Alex Ross. On top of that, Matt Renshaw and Joe Burns are still trying to make a name for themselves in the shortest form of the game.
Where they may be let down is their bowling. Spin is not easy to bowl on the Gabba, but plenty of pressure will fall on Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Mitch Swepson, along with new pace bowling recruit James Pattinson, who will simply want to stay away from injuries early in the season.
On the other side of the coin, the Strikers are defending champions having blown the Hobart Hurricanes away during last year’s BBL grand final at the Adelaide Oval.
Rashid Khan is their main man with the ball, and he could spin a web around the Heat’s top order if he can work out the Gabba and bowl effectively.
Even without the Afghanistani spinner playing well, Billy Stanlake and Ben Laughlin will lead the pace attack, while runs should be plentiful at the top of the order, even with regular captain Travis Head away playing for the Test team.
Big hitting import Colin Ingram will deputise as captain, while Jake Weatherald and Alex Carey also put together huge BBL seasons 12 months ago. If they can do it again this time around, the Strikers are going to be hard to slow down.
Prediction
The Strikers are defending champions and without too many changes to the squad, they should get over the line on the road, making a strong start to the season.
Strikers to win in a close one.
