The Melbourne Stars begin their BBL09 campaign on the Gold Coast against a Brisbane Heat side eager to bounce back from an opening defeat to the Sydney Thunder. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the game from 7:10pm (AEDT).
The Brisbane Heat will have fond memories of the last time they played the Melbourne Stars, destroying their interstate rivals by ten wickets.
Melbourne will be sick of the batting onslaught they received from Max Bryant and Ben Cutting last time out and now have a chance to give Brisbane a taste of their own medicine when they square off on the Gold Coast.
In Melbourne’s favour, the Heat lost both games at Metricon last season, with the Stars, in contrast, enjoying a win over the Thunder at the same venue.
The Stars have recruited very well and should mount a challenge for the BBL title this season. However, key recruit Dale Steyn is out of tonight’s contest and is replaced by Pakistan’s Haris Rauf.
Brisbane were patchy in their loss to the Thunder on Tuesday night and will be seeking improvement. The Stars will field a significantly beefed-up squad compared to last year and this encounter represents a real danger game for the Heat.
Two players to keep an eye on are Ben Laughlin and Ben Dunk. Laughlin at his best brings good quality to the Heat’s pace attack. He will certainly need to be in top form to nullify Ben Dunk’s batting prowess, given that Dunk is coming off some good form in South Africa.
Zahir Khan is another Heat player that should be better for the run after losing his head-to-head against Mitch Swepson. Khan is a good left-armer that showed promise in his four overs against the Thunder and could snare a few wickets tonight against the Stars.
Prediction
The Brisbane Heat failed to turn it on at the Gabba against the Thunder and need to do so here against a talented Stars outfit. A powerful innings from Chris Lynn and Max Bryant should help lay the platform for the Heat to get a confidence-boosting win.
Heat to win.
Can the Heat fire up against the Stars or will the fire burn out yet again for Brisbane? Don’t forget to join The Roar from 7:10pm (AEDT) for live scores and a blog of the game.
