England face India in Match 38 of the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 7:30pm (AEST).
Summer has finally arrived in the UK, and the Cricket World Cup is starting to liven up, but England are in danger of leaving their own party early.
Following two successive defeats, the hosts must beat India and get their tournament back on track, or face the ignominy of another early elimination.
In the seven World Cup matches between England and India both teams have three wins each with one ending in a tie.
England will have to gamble on the fitness of Jason Roy who looks certain to play in place of James Vince. The Surrey opener has sat out with a hamstring problem since his 153 against Bangladesh in Cardiff three weeks ago.
Fine margins have split the fortunes of India and England in this competition.
England’s batsmen have been caught on the boundary 15 times in this World Cup. India have only been dismissed in the outfield twice, the fewest in the tournament.
Today the home side are set to face India’s spinners on an Edgbaston pitch that generally provides more turn than any other World Cup venue. Add to that the classy seam of Mohammed Shami and Jasprit Bumrah and England might do well to bat first for a change and temper the roar of a predominantly Indian crowd.
The weight of expectation has certainly impaired England’s judgement and ability to adapt in this World Cup and Jonny Bairstow’s unhelpful comments last week only added extra heat to the pressure cooker.
In the cauldron of Birmingham’s Edgbaston, England must keep collectively cool heads and revert to the form that saw them reach this tournament as the number 1 ranked side in the world.
Prediction
Two-time champions India have eased through to this stage with 11 points from six matches and still seem to be saving their best cricket for July.
The middle order has been the only concern for Virat Kohli.
If Jofra Archer has recovered from the side injury which has hampered him in recent matches, the speed merchant could be the key to India’s undoing.
I can’t wait to watch how this plays out from behind the sofa. Foolheartedly, I’m sticking with England.
England to win.
