The Cricket World Cup has finally arrived, and it’ll be hosts England to get it underway as they take on South Africa at The Oval in London. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 7:30pm (AEST).

The showpiece tournament in cricket is down to ten teams, and no matter the whining from just about every cricket fan, it makes every single game crucial.

Realistically, with England’s fickle weather, losing anymore than two games could prove to be a disaster for any of the sides hoping to qualify for the semi-finals, which makes a game like this at the top end of town so early in the tournament absolutely crucial.

England come into the tournament as favourites, and with home ground advantage and a batting order which could send panic through the competition, that’s hardly a surprise.

Jos Buttler is the headline name, and his flurry of big hitting against Australia in the warm-up game the other night goes to show the form he is in, but there are star named right through the side.

From Jason Roy and Jonny Bairstow at the top, to skipper Eoin Morgan and the glue of Joe Root to hold it all together, it’s little surprise they enter the tournament off a smashing of Pakistan.

The home side’s bowling attack will have a couple of questions, but they have more than enough runs to cover for the queries there. Even then, Adil Rashid and Jofra Archer are likely to be stars of the show.

South Africa come into the tournament a little underdone on cricket in recent times, and that might show during their first couple of matches.

Still, if they can overcome that hurdle, they have a side who should be able to challenge anyone and everyone.

Their bowling attack is the biggest advantage, but shutting down England’s batting will give them a real challenge first up.

Dale Steyn, Kagiso Rabada and Lungi Ngidi are as good of a pace trio as you’ll find anywhere in world cricket, while veteran Imran Tahir supplements them nicely in the spin bowling department.

They also have plenty of experience with the bat – Faf du Plessis, JP Duminy and Hashim Amla lead the charge – while wicket keeper Quinton de Kock opening the innings and batting for a long time will be pivotal if they hope to stick with the scoring rate likely to be set by the home side.

Prediction
While England have the big hitting, they will be under immense pressure on home soil, and I smell South Africa causing an upset.
