Headingley will host its first game of the 2019 Cricket World Cup, and it could be something of a bloodbath as England take on the struggling Sri Lanka. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage of the match from 7:30pm (AEST).

England come into this match as only one of three teams who have still not been impacted by rain, and they really started to hit their straps against Afghanistan.

It’d be fair to say they haven’t quite been at their best throughout the World Cup, but Eoin Morgan’s stunning century against Afghanistan, in which he broke the record for most 6s in an ODI innings with 17, might well spark them to life.

Given the names they have right up and down their order alongside Morgan – Jason Roy, Jonny Bairstow, Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler just to name a few – as well as the guidance of Joe Root to anchor things, it’s unsurprising to see England with just a single loss to their name.

Of course, losing to Pakistan was something of a surprise, but they have walloped the West Indies and Afghanistan since then, so should be in a position to keep ramming home their form line against Sri Lanka.

On top of their batting, it’ll be the extreme pace of Jofra Archer among others who give them the biggest advantage in this match, with the Lankans struggling against quality pace at times in this World Cup.

Even when they have made a good start, as they did when they were chasing a mammoth total against Australia in their last game, it’s often fairly futile as once wickets begin falling, the rot normally sets in and they crumble.

They did pick up a victory against Afghanistan, but then, so has everyone, so at this point, it really means nothing.

Lasith Malinga will need to lead the way with the ball, while Dimuth Karunaratne is the key man with the bat if they are to make something of this game, but even then, their fielding has been atrocious and match management even worse, so it should be fairly one-sided here.

Prediction
England had one shock loss against Pakistan, but there isn’t going to be a second here. They are going to smoke Sri Lanka all around Headingley, and if they bat first, they could well top 400.

England comfortably.
