The rain gods are looking favourably on this one. With a top of 18 degrees and pockets of sunshine expected, as well as less than 10 percent chance of precipitation forecasted, tonight’s blockbuster clash between tournament favourites England and darkhorses the West Indies promises to be a mouthwatering battle which is sure to provide some high octane cricket. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog from 7:30pm AEST.
Both England and the West Indies have had powerful, emphatic starts to their world cup campaigns and have rightly staked their claim to show why they’re tournament frontrunners in the 2019 edition.
A minor hiccup against Pakistan, where England narrowly lost by just 14 runs and a thrilling last over defeat to Australia by 15 runs for the West Indies should not dampen either team’s bullish confidence, as their other clinical victorious performances have shown they have the firepower and tactical nous to win.
Determining a winner from tonight’s clash of heavyweights will be tricky, as both teams mirror each other evenly in terms of batting strength and fast bowling depth.
Where England has the slight upper hand is in spin bowling; both wristspinner Adil Rashid and fingerspinner Moeen Ali have proven to be effective at slowing the run rate in the middle overs and taking those key wickets at pivotal times.
The West Indies do not have that option; Ashley Nurse is nothing more than a part-timer and is yet to turn a ball.
Despite this, the likely return of Andre Russell to the West Indies line up is sure to send a few shivers down England’s spine.
Dangerman Dre Rus is already motoring at a treacherous strike of 136.36 in the tournament so far. Expect some big blows from the Jamaican all-arounder if he gets going.
Prediction
On paper England certainly has a more settled and balanced side and have been clinical in their victories against South Africa and Bangladesh, and you would naturally expect them to see this one through.
However there is something special about this resurgent West Indies team and the calypso Caribbean flair of old has appeared in brief patches in the way they play.
My heart says West Indies tonight, I believe they’ll cause an upset.
Catch us for all the action tonight on The Roar with our live blog, starting at 7:30pm AEST.

After some decent performances the WI have been really poor today although I suppose consistency is hardly their strength. Disappointing because I honestly thought that this was one of the matches England would have been wary of but it's been as one sided as any game so far.

And there it is! A third World Cup 50 for Joe Root, fantastic innings full of classical shots. His cover drives and delicate dabs to third man have been a treat to watch. He has been in excellent touch and is doing a fantastic job in sealing this game for his country.

Just 100 runs required for victory for England

Any chances of a West Indies fightback are being effectively snuffed out by Joe Root's beautiful batting. He plays with such an elegant, classic technique.

Just a 110 runs required for victory. It's just too simple for England now. The West Indies have truly lost it here today. Even with an injured Eoin Morgan and Jason Roy, England have just dominated this game throughout.

Hundred up for England after a lovely drive from Chris Woakes for four down the ground. The host nation is in absolute cruise control here.

These wides are killing the West Indies here. They're dampening any chances of making inroads into this game.

Chris Woakes comes into bat now. Interesting move here.

Gabriel to Bairstow WICKET! Finally a reason to celebrate for the West Indies. He slaps this short and wide delivery high and handsome to the fielder at deep third man. Bairstow's enterprising innings comes to an end. Simple catch in the end for the man in the deep. Overs 14.4 England 1/95

Holder to Root It's all getting too easy now. Harmless lifter on middle, Root guides this nicely for two out to midwicket. Overs 14 England 0/88

The amount of wides bowled by the West Indies is just absolutely ridiculous.

Oh and thank goodness there has been cricket played for once. Th rain has been spoilsport for most of this week.

Geez the game has been pretty one sided. The West Indies have been really ordinary today. England on the other hand, have been solid.
