As the Big Bash reaches its later stages, an intriguing Sunday double-header between the Hobart Hurricanes and Adelaide Strikers gets us underway in Tasmania. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 2:45pm (AEDT).

The standings may reflect little between the teams, but one has appeared a stretch more convincing than the other. While the Hurricanes pinched a point in their last match – a contest ruined by rain at the SCG – a win was needed. They have underwhelmed for much of BBL09, hampered by injuries and international selections.

The final leg of the tournament almost requires the Hurricanes to win all their remaining matches to keep any finals hopes alive. To label that unlikely is an understatement.

The Canes’ pace attack is struggling to contain opposition totals, and they are labouring on the scoreboard themselves. Recent scores of 9-126 and 98 would suggest this. They did produce a fine performance over in Perth two weeks ago, but it was launched by a brilliant century by D’Arcy Short, who is now with the national set-up and unable to bolster his side’s chances here.

On the subject of international duty, Adelaide remain without Alex Carey as Harry Nielsen keeps the gloves again. The inclusion of Travis Head has filled the void, bolstering a strong top order, and Jono Wells continues to impress. English import Phil Salt was back in the runs on Friday, crushing an unbeaten 67. The Hurricanes are yet to get the best from South African David Miller, but will be hoping he is at his destructive best.

Form wise, the Strikers appear a little unpredictable, albeit very strong at home. They still have two more games at the Adelaide Oval to come, but it’s imperative they win this one. They would love to be as clinical as Friday’s performance at home, eclipsing the Heat by ten wickets to firm up their top-five place.

Outside the Stars and Sixers, the jostling for finals positions is only heating up. As far as these two sides go, you would imagine there may be room for one, but certainly not both. The thumping endured by the Heat on Friday means Hobart remain in touching distance, but can’t afford a slip up from here on.

Prediction
With each contest uniquely difficult to pick, it’s impossible to know which way this one goes. Remember to join us on The Roar for the live blog.
