The Hobart Hurricanes return home after a long road trip and will be aiming to move one step closer to the minor premiership when they take on a struggling Brisbane Heat this afternoon. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 4pm (AEDT).
The Hurricanes have been excellent throughout the season, with eight wins from their ten games to leave them at the top of the table as we hit the business end of proceedings.
The men from Hobart have played their last five matches on the road though, and lost two of them – the negative results coming at the start and end against the Melbourne Renegades and Sydney Sixers respectively.
Outside of that though, they beat the Melbourne Stars, Perth Scorchers and Adelaide Strikers on the road, and in their four home games so far, are yet to register a loss.
With three of their final four games being played in Tasmania, it’s hard to see how the Hurricanes don’t finish top of the table, especially considering the form of Matthew Wade and D’Arcy Short, who, for the second year in a row, are forming a formidable opening competition and are the top two run-scorers in the competition to date.
Added to some of their bowling performances, led by the lies of Riley Meredith and James Faulkner, who has 16 wickets for the season, and they have been hard to stop.
It’s been the opposite situation for the Heat, and their season is dangling by a thread.
Following another two losses against the Sydney Sixers and Melbourne Stars – the latter of those from a seemingly strong position – they have been reduced to three wins and one no result from their ten games.
It’s a record which leaves them sitting second last on the ladder and more or less needing to win all of their four remaining games for a chance at the finals.
While their bowling has been inconsistent, it’s been the batting side of things which have let the Heat down.
Their middle order, even by BBL standards, is weak, and without Chris Lynn, Brendon McCullum and Max Bryant firing at the top (which they have failed to do far too often), they are more or less out of the game before it begins.
Predicition
Back at home, the Hurricanes will no doubt show us exactly why they are top of the table and cruising towards another finals series, all but ending the Heat’s campaign.
Hurricanes pretty easily.
