The BBL continues today when the Hobart Hurricanes take on the Melbourne Renegades at Blundstone Arena in Hobart. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match, starting from 11:10am (AEDT).
Normal services resume close to Christmas when all teams return to their traditional home grounds. However, for the first fortnight, with the threat of COVID still raising its ugly head from time to time, the BBL is based in Tasmania and the ACT.
That’s why Hobart have had plenty of home games. We also have an early start, to fit in with the day-night Test later in the day.
After two early wins, the Hurricanes suffered their first loss last Tuesday night against the Strikers. Peter Siddle ran riot and Hobart didn’t see out their 20 overs. Adelaide won comfortably with eight balls to spare.
If they were to take some positives out of that game, it was that Colin Ingram and Ben McDermott both scored 40s, potentially taking the pressure off D’Arcy Short in upcoming games. Tim David also continued his outstanding form early in the season.
The Hurricanes have a strong attack, led by James Faulkner and Scott Boland. Nathan Ellis’ range of change-up balls has made him an economical death bowler.
The Melbourne Renegades will be eager to play this game, if only to move on from their debacle against the Sixers.
Much depends on Shaun Marsh and Aaron Finch at the top of the order. If they can put on a good opening partnership, the rest will fall into place. Rilee Rossouw has scored runs for South Africa in this form of cricket and big things are expected of Jake Fraser-McGurk.
The Renegades’ bowling attack, led by the experience of Josh Lalor and Kane Richardson, need to produce more. Young leg spinner Peter Hatzoglou gives it a real rip.
Prediction
The Renegades upset the Scorchers first up but came back to earth with a thud against the Sixers.
They will improve for sure, but it won’t be enough to get a win against a solid Hurricanes line-up.
The Hurricanes by 20 runs or four wickets.
