The Hobart Hurricanes will open their BBL09 campaign against the Sydney Sixers in the sweltering heat of Alice Springs’ Traeger Park. Join The Roar from 2:45pm (AEDT) for live scores and a blog of the game.

The Sixers began their season with a win on Wednesday, defeating the Perth Scorchers by eight wickets after bowling them out for just 131 at the SCG.

22-year-old opening batsman Josh Philippe was in fine form for Sydney, smashing an unbeaten 81 off just 44 balls including 11 fours and three sixes, while Tom Curran was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3/32 off his four overs. Both players will be looking to back that up with another good showing against the ‘Canes on neutral ground in the Northern Territory.

The Hurricanes were last year’s minor premiers, although they will be bitterly disappointed after crashing out of the competition in the semi-finals. With largely the same squad as last season, including BBL08’s leading run-scorer D’Arcy Short, the Hurricanes will certainly have a point to prove this year, and will go into this clash as favourites.

As per usual, the Sixers will be without Test stars Steve Smith, Josh Hazelwood, Mitchell Starc and Nathan Lyon. However, there is plenty of depth in the squad, and they still have experienced campaigners Moses Henriques, Steven O’Keefe and Sean Abbott all on deck to contribute.

The Hurricanes will only be missing Matthew Wade through Test duty.

Prediction
The Sixers were very impressive against the Scorchers in their opening match of the season. However, it’s hard to look past a Hobart side with a point to prove after their disappointing finish to last season.

The Hurricanes will go into this one as deserved favourite, but don’t discount the Sixers – they will still give a good account of themselves.

It should be a great game and it will hopefully go down to the wire.

Don’t forget to join The Roar from 2:45pm (AEDT) for live scores and a blog of the game.

Match Report The Hobart Hurricanes have defeated the Sydney Sixers by 25 runs in Alice Springs to get their BBL 09 campaign off to a winning start. A magnificent spell of bowling from Afghani international leg spinner Qais Ahmad (4/12) proved decisive as he took the wickets of Tom Curran, Sean Abbott and Ben Dwarshuis in the one over to really initiate the Sixers' batting collapse. Chasing just 130, the Sixers would have fancied their chances early on with Josh Philippe and James Vince doing some early damage with bat in hand. However, as momentum slowed the Sixers got frustrated, leading to the dismissals of Philippe and Vince for just 24 and 18 respectively. Jordan Silk was out in the middle the longest for the Sixers. He formed a solid 9th wicket partnership with Ben Manenti, although the pair were unable to find the boundary often enough to avoid the required run rate reaching over 12 by the final over. In the end both were dismissed for 22, with James Faulkner claiming the wicket of Manenti to bring the innings to a close, the Sixers going down to their opposition by 25 runs. Hobart Hurricanes def. Sydney Sixers by 25 runs

Wicket Manenti goes for a big slog. Gets a huge edge up in the sky and that's an easy catch for the man at short third man and that's game over! The Hobart Hurricanes win by 25 runs over the Sydney Sixers in Alice Springs. Match report to come. Sixers all out for 104

Swing and a miss from Manenti. Good slow ball from Faulkner deceives the batsman well. 9/104

Wicket Faulkner in to bowl for the Hurricanes. Silk strikes this one well but D'Arcy Short catches him at deep square leg. Very hard to see the Sixers winning it from here. 9/102

8 runs off the over there. That's better stuff from Sydney but at this late stage it's not enough. They need 28 off 12. Not impossible. But with 2 overs to go now is the time to go for it. 8/102 After 18 overs

Six Manenti goes for a big six over square leg! Where's this been? Great stuff. The Sixers need more of it. 8/93

Silk on strike facing Milenko who's bowling his last over of the match. Takes a big swing at that first ball. Gets a bottom edge but it goes no where. 8/84

Manenti and Silk do well to keep the strike rotating in that over with 7 runs off it. Might not be enough to get them the win though. They need 46 runs with 24 balls remaining. 8/84 After 16 overs

Silk miss-hits, but Manenti is already halfway down the pitch so they take a quick single. Manenti has to negotiate 4 balls now. 8/73

2 dots to end the over. Very negative cricket from the Sixers. Silk will be backing himself for later in the innings, but with the required run rate at 10 per over it’s really getting away from them now. 8/70 After 14 overs
