The tenth season of the Big Bash League kicks off tonight with the Hobart Hurricanes hosting the defending champions, the Sydney Sixers, at Blundstone Arena. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match from 7:15pm (AEDT).

The Hurricanes have made a spree of signings to bolster their side for this season, including the current world number one T20 batsman, Dawid Malan. He is currently quarantining in Perth, having arrived last weekend from South Africa, where he won player of the series in England’s T20 series against the Proteas. More performances like that for his new club will make the Hurricanes very happy indeed.

For the moment though, the Hurricanes will have to do without Malan, although another new signing, Peter Handscomb from the Melbourne Stars, is expected to fulfil a similar role to the Englishman.

The Sixers also have a few new faces in their squad, including Carlos Brathwaite, but they will be without Tom Curran, who has decided to sit out the BBL so he can spend time at home after months of life in bio-secure bubbles.

Based on the Sixers’ narrow victory over the Hurricanes in a warm-up match between the two sides on Tuesday, we could see an equally close match tonight, and that’s without taking the new rules for BBL10 into consideration.

When put into practice, how will the new rules influence the teams’ gameplan?

That is just one of many questions surrounding the introduction of the ‘power surge’, two overs of powerplay conditions which batting sides can use anytime from the 11th over onwards, and the ‘bash boost’ bonus point, which batting sides can earn if they are ahead of the game at the halfway stage of their run chase.

Both teams also have the ability to bring in their ‘x-factor player’ as a substitute halfway through the first innings, so long as the player that is substituted hasn’t batted yet, or bowled more than one over.

The new rules could either turn out to be a brilliant idea, or it could end up being a long and confusing night.

The proof of the pudding will be in the eating on that front.

They're waiting for Sandeep Lamichhane to finish his quarantine, ready to fly to Australia, quarantine again, then join the squad after Christmas.

That's the tenth season of the Big Bash underway then, and there's a match every night until the first Test between Australia and India on Thursday. The Melbourne Stars and the Brisbane Heat open up their campaign when they play each other tomorrow night, and David Holden will be with you on Saturday afternoon for the Stars' game against the Sydney Thunder. A well deserved win from the Hobart Hurricanes tonight, you could say snatching victory from what looked like the jaws of defeat at times. Good night everybody.

The new rules have not had any adverse impact at all. In fact, the power surge may have been what swung this one in the Hurricanes' favour. Nevertheless, they continued to come back into this game from setbacks, whether that be their openers falling early and leaving them 2/4 in the second over, or James Vince and Jack Edwards putting on a hundred partnership, which looked to take the game away from the Hurricanes. Tim David is the player of the match.

Strong comeback from the Hurricanes. The Sixers looked set with Vince and Edwards at the crease but the house of cards has started to tumble down. Two singles from the last two balls more or less puts this victory in the Hurricanes' hands. Sydney Sixers 6/157 20th over Target 179
