The first of the BBL finals in this new format sees the fourth-placed Hobart Hurricanes host the fifth-placed Sydney Thunder. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 7:40pm (AEDT).
Both teams enter the finals with an identical record of six wins, seven losses and one no result.
The Hurricanes finished their home-and-away season strongly with a good win over the Strikers at home on Sunday.
Winning the bat flip and electing to bat, the Hurricanes set a total of 1-217. Matthew Wade notched up the second highest score in the BBL for the season with 130*. Opening partner D’Arcy Short scored 72 runs of his own. The Strikers nearly chased them down, falling just ten runs short.
The Thunder also ended the season with a win. Their triumph came in a weather-affected match against the Scorchers in Perth. Set a DLS target of 96, Thunder would reach 97 with two balls to spare. Alex Hales top scored with 47.
The last time these teams met was only last Friday. Hurricanes batted first and won by a solid 57 runs.
The Hurricanes have been forced into making one change to their squad. South African import David Miller has been called up to play for the national team, meaning the Hurricanes will be without him for the rest of their finals campaign. Simon Milenko comes in in place of Miller.
For the Thunder, Gurinder Sandhu comes out of the 13-man squad for the returning Brendan Doggett.
Prediction
They are evenly balanced teams, but Hobart’s top-order batsmen come into this in better run-scoring form. The wickets of Wade and Short early would go a long way to helping the Thunder get the result.
However, at home and in form, I can’t help but think the Hurricanes will win.
Follow all the action on The Roar, with coverage starting at 7:40pm (AEDT).
