Hobart Hurricanes take on the Sydney Thunder in the 11th game of the Big Bash League this season, with the Bellerive Oval in Hobart to play hosts. The game will begin at 7:15pm local time and you can follow it live with The Roar below.
It’s a battle for the top spot this early in the competition with both the Hurricanes and Thunder having won both their opening two encounters.
A win for either side will make them the first to get to three from three and give them an early lead in the race to the finals, although this season it is more a marathon battle than a sprint to get there given the number of matches for each team during the league stage has increased to 14 each.
The Hurricanes started off with a 15-run win over Brisbane Heat but the manner of their victory over the Melbourne Stars will even enthuse them even more.
A bowling attack consisting of Jofra Archer, James Faulkner and part-timer D’Arcy Short restricted the Stars to 155 after it looked like a score of 170 was on the cards. They restricted the opposition to just 36 runs from the last 34 balls before chasing the target down easily in the end.
Captain Matthew Wade scored a half-century with Short chipping in with 34 off his own to grab another man-of-the-match award – he now has the most in BBL since his debut.
The Thunder have a batting that could test some of the best in the business, what with the likes of Jos Buttler, Shane Watson, Joe Root and Callum Ferguson forming the core of their batting and both Jason Sangha and Daniel Sams possessing the ability to do a job of their own.
That said, in their game against the cross-town rivals Sixers, it was their bowling that bailed them out.
Finishing on 9/169 from their 20 overs, the Thunder might have fallen a few runs short but Sams and Fawad Ahmed shared six wickets between them to ensure the Sixers were never in the hunt. And despite some late-order heroics from Tom Curran they fell 21 runs short.
This was after the Thunder won their first encounter, a rain-affected one, 15 runs. Batting first, they made 5/181 leaving the Stars to score 89 from their eight overs.
Again, much like the game against the Sixers, the Thunder bowling carved apart the top-order and while Nick Larkin smashed a 13-ball 28, the Stars fell way short.
Prediction
Thunder to go to top of the table with their third successive win.
