MS Dhoni 59* and Kedar Jadhav 81* have guided India home to take a six wicket victory in the First ODI.
After a modest total of 236 was put on the board for Australia, it looked as if India would do it easy with such a strong, experienced and in form batting line up.
The early breakthrough of Dhawan – gone for a golden duck – forced Kohli and Rohit to put together a solid partnership and get India off to a good start.
The loss of Kohli, soon followed by Rohit and then Rayudu, evened things up; but as expected, Dhoni and Jadhav cruised to victory, Australia unable to find any further wickets in the second half of the innings.
Zampa picked up two, as did Coulter-Nile, and it was a fairly solid day in the field for Australia, only a few misfields nearing the end of the innings.
In summary, Finch won the toss and chose to bat, Australia only able to put together a small total, well below par. Plenty of starts for the batmen, but no one to really go on with it.
India bowled well, consistent and aggressive in their approach against somewhat timid Australian batsmen.
Australia bowled well to the India batters early, but unfortunately the total was always going to be a bit short.
India may have taken it down to the final two overs, but the final ten overs were dominated by the home side. Confident striking by both Dhoni and Jadhav.
Final score
India 4/240
Australia 7/236
After a T20 series victory, Australia will take on India in a series of ODI matches beginning on Saturday. Join The Roar for live scores and ball-by-ball coverage from 7pm AEDT.
The five-match series opens in Hyderabad and is a key opportunity for the two countries to fine-tune their squad for the fast-approaching World Cup.
India are not concerned by the T20 series loss to Australia on home soil, citing the ODI series as more important in preparations for the feature fixture on the 2019 calendar.
India will rest Bhuvneshwar Kumar for the opening two games, Siddarth Kaul will make way for him to return in the third ODI.
Indian Test gloveman Rishabh Pant has been added in the squad and is expected to assume the role of reserve wicket-keeper in India’s World Cup squad.
The line-up for India has been consistent in recent times and it is anticipated they’ll select a strong line-up for the first ODI, trialling small changes later in the series if deemed suitable for the pitch conditions and series situation.
Australian captain Aaron Finch confirmed Alex Carey would take the gloves for the first ODI, after Peter Handscomb played the wicketkeeping role in the T20s.
Andrew Tye has flown to India to replace paceman Kane Richardson, who headed home with a side strain.
Shaun Marsh won’t play this first ODI, only flying into Hyderabad in the last 48 hours after remaining home for the birth of his second child, but will be available for selection from the second ODI.
Australia is still looking to find that winning combination and run of form, their last ODI series victory was against Pakistan, way back in January 2017.
There aren’t too many more opportunities before the World Cup and there are things to work on for both sides, and decisions to be made regarding team lists before the April 23 deadline.
Prediction
In their last ODI series before the World Cup India will be tweaking a fairly settled squad and be out to continue good form after series wins in Australia and New Zealand.
Australia might have won two T20s already in India, but their still problematic batting will be tested in the 50-over format.
India to win.
