Australia will be looking to wrap up a series victory away from home when they take on India in the second of three ODIs tonight. Join The Roar for live scores of the match from 7pm (AEDT).
Coming off their biggest ever win in ODI history against the home side, when an excellent all-round bowling effort and superb unbeaten opening partnership from David Warner (128*) and Aaron Finch (110*) spearheaded a ten-wicket victory, Australia come to Rajkot in fine form.
The bowling unit functioned well together after India threatened to pull away with a big score early on, and the Finch-Warner combination atop the order is one of the best in limited-overs cricket.
That said, the middle and lower order haven’t had much to do against the white ball since last year’s World Cup. Marnus Labuschagne didn’t have to bat on debut last game despite being listed at no.3, and while Steve Smith is a proven performer in ODIs, the likes of Ashton Turner and Ashton Agar are not.
If India do get the wickets which deserted them on Tuesday and manage to snare Finch and Warner early, there may be a vulnerability for them to exploit.
As for the hosts, little went right for them on Tuesday. Shikhar Dhawan (74) and KL Rahul (47) were the only notable performers, combining for a 121-run stand for the second wicket before the rest of the order crumbled to be bowled out in the last over.
Virat Kohli bumped himself down the order to no.4 to accommodate Rahul, a move which backfired on the India skipper. He only contributed 16 before being caught and bowled by Adam Zampa, who has made a habit of claiming the most prized scalp in ODI cricket.
Expect to see Virat back to his preferred position at first drop; he averages eight more when batting at three than four, and hasn’t passed 20 in the lower spot since November 2014 (although he’s admittedly only played eight innings there in that time).
Prediction
India can’t possibly be as lacklustre as they were in Mumbai this time around. Expect a far better performance, particularly from the bowling attack, and for the hosts to set up a deciding third game on Sunday.
India to win.
