India face Pakistan at Old Trafford in Match 22 of the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 7:30pm (AEST).
It’s anticipated that close to a billion people will have tuned in by tea-time on Sunday to watch the 22nd match at this rain-splattered tournament.
This game is significant, and not just in terms of cricket. It means just as much off the pitch as it does on it.
800,000 fans applied to be part of this sporting spectacle at a cricket ground with a capacity of just 26,000.
India vs Pakistan is the hottest ticket in Manchester – a city that knows sporting hostility – but not on this scale.
This is 70-plus years of animosity between countries, and for these bitterest of rivals, cricket is a release.
In terms of this World Cup, Pakistan badly need a victory to keep in touch with the top four.
The Men in green lost their first game to the West Indies and were well beaten by Australia four days ago.
Pakistan captain, Sarfaraz Ahmed, will look to Wahib Riaz to produce the sort of spell that rocked England in Pakistan’s only win of the tournament so far.
India have had two extra days to recuperate following their washout against New Zealand on Thursday. The two-time World Cup winners are still unbeaten in this tournament.
However, the Men in Blue are still sweating on opening batsman Shikhar Dhawan’s hand injury. The opener who averages 65 in 19 ODIs in England suffered a hairline fracture against Australia.
India are still in confident mood though, and boast a perfect record of six World Cup victories out of six against their rivals.
However, Pakistan did win the most recent clash between these two – the 2017 Champions Trophy Final – by 180 runs.
The Old Trafford pitch should be reasonable for batting, although conditions will help swing and seam.
Prediction
Mostly cloudy with spotty showers. An electric atmosphere with a chance of spin.
India to win.
