World cricket’s fiercest rivalry renews in Dubai as India and Pakistan square off to get their T20 World Cup campaigns off and running. Join The Roar for live scores from 1am (AEDT).

Political and religious disputes have all but resigned this clash to World and Asia Cups; but such is the fervour it generates that it is almost guaranteed to be the tournament’s most-watched game, as it was in the 2015 and 2019 ODI World Cups. Perhaps only the Ashes can exceed it for hype; and even then, that’s no guarantee.

However, aside from a memorable Pakistan upset in the 2017 Champions Trophy, India have dominated this tussle for a decade, and heading into this tournament as favourites, they’re highly fancied to continue their stranglehold.

Perhaps the most fascinating subplot in this game is the duel between the two captains, and star batsmen. In India’s corner is the masterful Virat Kohli; while for Pakistan, it’s emerging superstar Babar Azam. The former’s limited-overs supremacy is well known: his T20I average of 52.65 makes him the only player in the format’s history to exceed the 50 mark. Babar, though, is third on that list with a more than handy 46.89, and sits two spots ahead of Kohli in second on the ICC batting rankings. He’s every inch his equal.

The old foes will be slugging it out with New Zealand for the two semi-final spots available in Group B, so a loss would leave the vanquished walking on eggshells for the remainder of the tournament. However, there’s more than just the competition at stake when India and Pakistan lock horns: the pride of a nation is on the line.
