It’s sudden death tonight when the Melbourne Renegades take on the Brisbane Heat at Marvel Stadium in the BBL Knockout. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 7:15pm (AEDT).

In a regular competition dominated by the Perth Scorchers and Sydney Sixers, the Melbourne Renegades finished best of the rest. They start their finals campaign tonight against a Heat outfit that progressed through the Eliminator on Friday night.

After three straight seasons as wooden spooners, the Renegades make their first finals appearance for four years. Aaron Finch and Shaun Marsh, after returning from injury, have found a rich vein of form and are largely responsible for their team’s run into the finals. Martin Guptill has struggled in his first season in the BBL but may be saving his best for the finals.

On the bowling front, Kane Richardson has been as solid as ever, though will miss this match through personal reasons, and Tom Rogers has arguably had his best season to date. Fawad Ahmed is a good spin option and will likely feature tonight.

The Renegades’ advantage, if they win tonight, is that the core of this team will play together throughout the entire final series, whereas the Scorchers and Sixers will lose players to the India-Australia Test series.

Another team to lose players will be the Heat; however, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne and Matt Renshaw can inflict some damage before they leave. They did exactly that in Friday night’s Eliminator against the Thunder, with the three Australian Test players key in the 203-run total. Khawaja, in particular, was in ominous touch, making a match-winning 94.

The Heat’s bowlers are led by Michael Neser, however, little-known left-arm quick Spencer Johnson has arrived on the scene this season. His “death” bowling has been enough to secure at least two wins late in the regular fixtures.

The Heat will likely miss Mitch Swepson, called into camp in Sydney ahead of the tour of India, with Matt Kuhnemann taking on greater responsibility.

Prediction

The Renegades have an impressive record at Marvel Stadium, winning four of five games. Matches between the Renegades and Heat were split at 1-1 this season, with neither of them played in Melbourne.

I’m leaning towards the Heat. The big three of Brisbane took the Thunder bowlers apart on Friday night after a cautious start. They will be working towards another large total.

The Renegades don’t have quite as much firepower. Guptill or Sam Harper will need a good score to support Finch and Marsh.

Brisbane Heat by 10 runs or three wickets.
