Show Preview
The second semi-final of the eighth season of the Big Bash League will be played on Friday, February 15, with the Melbourne Renegades taking on the Sydney Sixers at Docklands Stadium in Melbourne. The match starts at 7:40pm local time. You can follow it live with The Roar below.
The stakes would be way higher for the Renegades who have never entered the final of the Big Bash League, and we are talking of seven previous editions.
What makes their entry into the semi-final an interesting one is their best batsman in the tournament has been one who has scored less than half the runs made by the top run-getter.
Sam Harper’s 299 is way lower than D’Arcy Short’s 637 runs, while the next best is Tom Cooper’s 267 runs.
Unfortunately for them, the Renegades will go into this semi-final without Mohammad Nabi, their third-best batsman and off-spinner who has picked eight wickets at a very acceptable economy-rate of 7.4 RPO.
The Sixers, led by Daniel Hughes and his 347 runs, have had four other 200+ scorers, which has helped but the one issue for them would also be the reason why they missed out on playing at home in this semi-finals.
A win over Melbourne Stars in their last league game or even a small loss would have ensured that.
Instead, in pursuit of a target of 169, the Sixers were bowled out for 74 and despite finishing level on points with the Renegades, they came third to their opponent’s second thanks to the net run-rate situation.
But where they might score over the Renegades is while the Melbourne side has had one bowler who has done bulk of the wicket-taking, three of the Sixers have chipped in with a bucketful.
Kane Richardson is the highest wicket-taker in the tournament with 24 to his name, but Sean Abbott, Tom Curran and Steve O’Keefe, all representing the Sixers have captured a total of 60 wickets between them.
Prediction
The Sixers’ superior bowling attack as a pack and Nabi’s absence should have them as favourites to win this game.
