With one match played each, the Melbourne Stars and Hobart Hurricanes launch a third consecutive day of double-header BBL action. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary, with the first ball at 2:45pm (AEDT).

Last year’s finalists the Stars go regional for their first home game, hosting this one in Moe, Victoria. Many still wonder just how they managed to squander the BBL08 title back in February, yet funnily enough it was Hobart they defeated to get there.

You might say that contest etched another small chapter in a rather understated Big Bash rivalry. Make no mistake, tension exists between these two.

It might stem from past semi-final battles – the first of which was ignited by some cheeky pre-match comments by Hobart’s Tim Paine around the Stars’ salary cap position. The result was a fuming Stars president, made worse by his side’s defeat.

Or is it the exchange of many noteworthy players throughout the course of the competition? Names such as George Bailey, James Faulkner, Ben Dunk, Scott Boland and Matthew Wade have flipped between the teams.

For an added element of spice, this is a contest between the only two sides yet to be crowned BBL champions.

The forecast appears fine too, as we hope to see regional fans turn up in numbers as this product continues to expand its reach. The Stars are one from one at Ted Summerton Reserve, having accounted for the Strikers at the venue during BBL08.

With the Stars remaining typically rich in talent, they begin the tournament without prized veteran recruit Dale Steyn through injury. Fortunately his replacement Haris Rauf has already made an impact.

Similarly, Glenn Maxwell is back and instantly wowed with 83 from 39 balls on the Gold Coast, and is well complemented by a batting line-up oozing quality. The Stars’ attack did an excellent job restricting the Heat on Friday night.

For new captain Ben McDermott, his Hurricanes are out to prove that the absence of Matthew Wade will not hinder their chances. So far so good. D’Arcy Short began with a half-century, after leading the tournament run-scoring for the past two seasons, while spin sensation Qais Ahmad dazzled taking 4/12, as Hobart kept the Sixers at bay. It is exciting that both teams enter this clash with an early win on the board.

Prediction
Both outfits include several players of obvious international quality, so a contest worth watching awaits.
