The Melbourne Stars welcome the top-of-the-table Hobart Hurricanes to the Melbourne Cricket Ground in a game they must simply win if they have finals aspirations. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match, starting from 7:15pm (AEDT).
It just has not happened for the Stars in this campaign. One could argue that this is the least formidable list they have put together in recent times.
What has not helped is losing the likes of Glenn Maxwell and Adam Zampa to international duty, and then you add Sandeep Lamichhane departing to the Bangladesh Premier League.
They cannot complain though as they knew this would have been coming in terms of player availabilities.
On a positive note, you can definitely see a future with a few of the younger players coming through. The likes of Liam Bowe and Seb Gotch have shown glimpses of what they can offer.
Ben Dunk has found some form with the stick, which saw him bring up his first half-century for the Stars not too long ago against the Perth Scorchers.
Dwayne Bravo has been very useful with the ball and bat, showing why the green half of Melbourne were keen to secure his services.
The Hurricanes though are better placed, and it is simply down to list management. It is an experienced squad of players.
Matthew Wade has continued his form from the Sheffield Shield into the Big Bash making plenty of runs. D’Arcy Short has shown his power at the top of the order alongside Wade, also.
George Bailey has shown that age is irrelevant. Riley Meredith has been the surprise for many as he is just a bit of an unknown quantity, but he has bowled extremely well.
James Faulkner has also shown with the ball why he was a key figure for Australia in the shorter formats only a few years ago.
I could go on forever, but the Hurricanes just have the basics covered better than any other side at the minute, which is why they are at the top of the table.
Prediction
There is a reason the Hurricanes are at the top of the table, and they will show why against the Stars tonight.
They are such a powerful side with ball and bat, and with the Stars not quite at full-strength, that will prove the difference in the end.
