The ladder-leading Melbourne Stars host the Sydney Thunder at the MCG on Wednesday evening. Join The Roar for coverage of the match, with live scores and a blog starting at 7:10pm (AEDT).
The Stars are coming off a strong win against Melbourne rivals the Renegades, winning by eight wickets. Sandeep Lamichhane bowled well, taking three wickets and restricting the Renegades to 142 runs in 20 overs.
Marcus Stoinis carried the chase, scoring 68 not out, while Glenn Maxwell made 40 as the Stars won with seven balls to spare.
Sydney Thunder featured in a rain-affected match on Monday, losing by 16 runs to the Brisbane Heat.
Bowling first, the Thunder got smashed around the park by the Heat, including an over by Arjun Nair that went for 30. Sydney were unable to make the runs required in the five-over innings.
Hilton Cartwright and Haris Rauf return to the Stars’ line-up, as Dale Steyn heads home to South Africa in preparation for a T20 series against England and Jon Merlo is omitted.
Jonathan Cook and Nathan McAndrew join the Thunder squad, replacing Liam Bowe and Gurinder Sandhu.
These two teams met last Thursday at Sydney Showground Stadium. The Thunder put 142 runs on the board but it wasn’t enough, as the Stars chased it down with two balls to spare.
Nick Larkin top scored with 65 runs and won player of the match. Marcus Stoinis also scored 58 runs, but the team had three players fall for ducks.
This match features the leading run-scorer Marcus Stoinis (281 runs) and the leading wicket-taker Daniel Sams (14), as of Tuesday evening’s leader boards.
Prediction
The Stars are the form team of the competition at the moment and they look like they could go all the way.
Melbourne only need one or two batsmen to fire and a big total is on the cards, while the spin of Adam Zampa and Sandeep Lamichhane has been effective against most teams.
Melbourne will continue their winning run this evening.
