The stakes don’t get much bigger than this tonight when the MCG hosts the Challenger final between the Melbourne Stars and Sydney Thunder. The winner will go on to play the Sydney Sixers in the Final. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match, starting from 7:40pm AEDT.

Just over two weeks ago, the Melbourne Stars were locked into first place on the BBL table and it seemed inevitable that this year would be the year that their title drought would be broken.

How things have changed. Since then, the Stars have lost four matches straight and their supporters are concerned that this will prove another season which slips away come final time.

Despite a long batting order, much depends on Marcus Stoinis or Glenn Maxwell getting amongst the runs. Whilst that happened regularly earlier in the season, it has dried up of late. There is plenty of pressure on one of these two to occupy the crease for a long time.

The Stars’ bowling unit has still been performing strongly, keeping the Sixers to only 142 last Friday night. Haris Rauf has returned strongly from a short international tour whilst Adam Zampa is one of the form bowlers in the competition.

By comparison, the Sydney Thunder stumbled into the semi-finals courtesy of a Brisbane Heat loss in the final round.

Most thought they would be easy pickings for the Hobart Hurricanes. Instead, Alex Hales and Usman Khawaja blew the game wide open in the first ten overs and the Thunder never really looked like losing.

Against the Strikers, Hales went it alone with the Thunder posting a more modest total. The Strikers looked to be home, but a collapse following the Alex Carey run out sealed their fate. The Strikers lost by eight runs and the Thunder, somewhat improbably, were in the final three.

For the Thunder batting, it boils down to their top four. Below Alex Ross, the batting order gets very thin. The Stars will be desperate for wickets in the Power Play.

The Thunder’s bowling attack is largely unheralded but Daniel Sams, Chris Morris and Jono Cook just keep taking wickets. Sams has an amazing 30 wickets for the season.

Prediction
Contrary to past years, the high-placed finish to the regular season has given the Stars a chance to atone for their finals defeat by the Sixers.

They will be hurting from this and I expect their class players to show up tonight.

Melbourne Stars by 20 runs or three wickets.
