The push for the Cricket World Cup finals will ramp up a gear when a desperate Pakistan clash with New Zealand, who can become the second team to secure their spot in the top four. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 7:30pm (AEST).
With Australia’s victory over England last night, they are the first team into the top four, and New Zealand can become the second tonight.
However, with England’s shock loss to Sri Lanka late last week, and the failure to Australia, they have thrown the competition wide open once again, and Pakistan could be the side to make the last semi-final spot their own.
They will need to hope England lose one or both of their remaining games, but can continue ramping up the pressure here with a win over the Black Caps.
From a Pakistani point of view, there is no better ground to play the Black Caps on that Edgbaston on either. Likely to take spin, it’s the one department where they are unquestionably better, while their aggressive batting should come to the forefront in the first ten overs if the ball doesn’t swing.
Trent Boult and Matt Henry in particular rely on that early movement, and if there is none, the likes of Fakhar Zaman, Imam-ul-Haq and Babar Azam can really look to build a platform for the Pakistan middle order to tee off.
Even if it all does go right though, it’ll be a tall order to topple the Black Caps, who are undefeated besides their washout against India.
The biggest problem is that they are yet to test themselves against the big guns with that wash out against the Indians, and so it’s a little uncertain exactly where they are at.
Their top order has been a bit up and down throughout World Cup, and while Martin Guptill is due for a big score, it’s the form of Ross Taylor and Kane Williamson which has been their saving grace.
Playing out Mohammad Amir will be the key here though. If they can do that and handle the Pakistani spinners, there are plenty of runs to be had.
Prediction
I tipped New Zealand earlier in the week, but the loss to England last night sways me the other way. On a likely spin friendly Edgbaston, a desperate side who have a knack of pulling out inconsistently big performances will take the win.
Pakistan in a thriller.
