New Zealand will be looking to continue in their winning ways today against South Africa at Edgbaston. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match, starting from 7:30pm (AEST).
Kane Williamson’s side have yet again proved everyone wrong. They were never in the discussions when it came to a potential winner of the 2019 World Cup, but they should be in the conversation now.
After four games, the Kiwis have notched up three wins, which puts them firmly within the top four.
They don’t possess the talent of some of the other nations, but they consistently get the best out of themselves, especially in World Cup campaigns.
It was a shame their previous clash against India at Trent Bridge was abandoned without a ball being bowled, as rain took its toll.
It would have been good to see where New Zealand are against an outfit like India, but time will tell as the tournament progresses.
As for South Africa, they claimed their first victory of the tournament in their previous clash against Afghanistan in Cardiff.
It has been a tough tournament for Faf du Plessis’ team, but that victory in Cardiff may just help build up some momentum for the remainder of the campaign.
Afghanistan batted first in the game, but they could only post 125 runs on the board. Imran Tahir bowled superbly, as he finished with figures of 4-29 off seven overs. Chris Morris was also terrific, as he finished with figures of 3-13 off 6.1 overs.
South Africa were able to chase down the total only losing the one solitary wicket. Quinton de Kock compiled 68 runs from 72 balls to get things going for South Africa.
Hashim Amla looked scratchy, but he batted good time and finished with an unbeaten 41 runs from 83 deliveries. Andile Phehlukwayo contributed with a handy 17 not out to wrap up the game.
Prediction
New Zealand are in some decent form in this current World Cup, and I would expect that momentum to be too much for South Africa.
New Zealand to prevail.
