The first weekend of the Cricket World Cup is here and in their first matches for the tournament, New Zealand come up against Sri Lanka in Wales. Join The Roar for all of the action, with live scores and comments from 7:30pm AEST.

In the first of four matches at Cardiff Wales Stadium in Cardiff, the fourth-ranked ODI team – New Zealand – will meet the ninth-ranked side in Sri Lanka.

New Zealand are a real chance to make the semi-finals, but the same can’t be said for Sri Lanka.

In the warm-up fixtures prior to the World Cup, New Zealand defeated India by six wickets and then lost to the West Indies by 91 runs.

New Zealand bowled India out for just 179 runs a week ago, and then Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor put solid runs on the board to give their side some confidence going into the tournament.

Trent Boult and Jimmy Neesham took the wickets against India, and while the runs were piled on by the West Indies in the second match, Trent Boult took another four wickets.

In the run chase against the West Indies, Kane Williamson put 85 runs on and Tom Blundell scored a century in the unsuccessful chase, pressing his statement as a back-up wicketkeeper.

Sri Lanka fell to both South Africa (by 87 runs) and Australia (by five wickets).

Dimuth Karunaratne, made skipper for Sri Lanka after a four-year hiatus from ODI’s, impressed with a half-century against South Africa, but fell early in the innings against Australia.

Lahiru Thirimanne made some runs against Australia, as did Dhananjaya de Silva late in the innings with a 43-run cameo.

In the match with South Africa, Suranga Lakmal and Nuwan Pradeep took two wickets each, while Jeffrey Vandersay got in on the action with two against Australia.

At Cardiff, in the two completed warm-up matches, the teams batting first scored over 300 runs. So large scores should be expected, particularly if New Zealand bat first.

A mostly cloudy day, with a very low chance of showers, is anticipated in Cardiff on Saturday. Hopefully that means a full match, with plenty of runs!

Prediction
New Zealand are the superior side here, Sri Lanka have been unable to put together a complete performance in the warm ups and will struggle this tournament. New Zealand to get an early win on the board.
