The first of three T20s between Pakistan and Australia will be played in Abu Dhabi as the hosts look to protect their number one ranking in the format. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 3am (AEDT).

It’s not often teams meet each other in two different T20 series in the same year, but that’s what has happened to Pakistan and Australia. The pair was involved in a tri-series earlier this year – Zimbabwe were the third side – and will now face off yet again in a bilateral, three-match series.

And Australia will have not just have revenge on mind for that previous T20 series defeat and the Test series loss, but will also know what awaits them if they win the series 3-0 – a world number one ranking.

Pakistan can ill afford to follow up their showing in the Asia Cup with such a result given the proximity to the World Cup and what such a result could do to their confidence.

In that tri-series in Zimbabwe, these two teams played three times and after Australia won their first encounter, Pakistan stormed back to clinch the next and then beat the Aussies in the final with some ease.

The pitches in the UAE, however, will be very different from those back in Zimbabwe. Those were flat and high-scoring while the average score of the team batting first in Abu Dhabi is less than 140 – what it means is expect it to be double-paced, a perfect recipe for batsmen needing to settle in and bat long or run the risk of a struggling new-comer unable to get going.

Pakistan will be without Mohammad Amir, who has been dropped from this series and Shoaib Malik, who has taken time off for personal reasons.

The rest of the side is on expected lines, going in with three seamers and two frontline spinners with Mohammad Hafeez expected to take over the sixth bowler’s role if needed.

Australia, led by Aaron Finch, have a 15-member squad to their disposal but Mitchell Starc might be ruled out because of a hamstring issue. Of the rest, one of the three spinners in Nathan Lyon, Ashton Agar and Adam Zampa could be dropped, as would one seamer and Ben McDermott.

Prediction
Australia will be gunning for revenge and unlike in the Tests, they have the team that can take Pakistan the distance. Expecting Australia to surprise Pakistan in this one.
