Australia will attempt to hang on for a draw when the fifth day of the first Test against Pakistan gets underway in Dubai. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 5pm (AEDT).

The Aussies were tasked with facing out a tick over four and a half sessions to save the match after a solid bowling performance in the second innings.

Like their first innings disaster, things were going along smoothly with openers Aaron Finch and Usman Khawaja at the crease.

When a reviewed LBW removed Finch for 49, things went pear-shaped, with the Marsh brothers both falling shortly after for ducks to leave Australia three wickets down.

After some nervy moments early in his innings, Travis Head provided the support for Khawaja neither of the Marsh brothers could, batting all the way to stumps for 34 not out.

Given the run-rate has been pretty slow across all four innings of the match to date, the chance of scoring another 326 runs with seven wickets in the sheds is remote for the tourists.

Instead, this is going to be a battle of attrition. A battle of batting for time and hoping against hope they can see off 90 – maybe more – overs until the umpires call stumps.

If Australia are to escape with a draw, they will need everything to go right, but the first of those was stopping the rot yesterday. After losing ten for 60 in the first innings, they must stop any collapses and ensure partnerships are built at every hurdle.

It’d be fair to say Khawaja and Head need to see out the first session. Debutant Marnus Labuschagne looked out of sorts in the first innings, leaving for a second-ball duck, and the last thing any Australian wants is the pressure heaped on Tim Paine to survive two sessions after that.

Still, Australia are fighting against the odds here. The pitch is doing a few weird things, especially once the ball gets a little bit older.

The hosts will need more from Yasir Shah today. He has had an incredibly quiet Test and is yet to pick up a wicket, while Bilal Asif needs to get back to where he was during the first innings when he took six scalps.

Even if the spin duo are the keys to the hosts taking the next seven wickets, Mohammad Abbas has been tough to handle throughout the match and him building pressure in short spells across the day will help.

Then again, bowling tight and accurate won’t necessarily frustrate the Aussies with scoring rate out the window today.
