After a batting collapse yesterday, Australia are back in the field on Day 4 of the first test against Pakistan. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 5pm (AEDT).
All was going well for Australia in the first session on Day 3, with the opening partnership of Usman Khawaja and debutant Aaron Finch building strongly to put on 107 runs by lunch.
Things took a turn after the break though, as the Pakistani bowlers found some reverse swing and turn from the wicket, a recipe for an Australian nightmare.
After an opening stand partnership of 142 runs, Australia’s ten wickets went for just 60 runs.
It was all too familiar for the Aussies once the ball started moving, with a batting collapse the outcome.
Australian debutants Travis Head and Marnus Labuschagne fell for ducks, as did Mitchell Starc. Captain Tim Paine made just seven, with no middle or tail order batsmen taking a stand against the Pakistan bowling.
Bilal Asif debuted with six for 36 runs – brilliant figures – while Mohammad Abbas took the remaining four wickets.
Pakistan started well with the bat, but lost three quick wickets to finish at 3 for 45.
Mohammed Hafeez was caught by Marnus Labuschagne off Jon Holland’s bowling 12 overs into Pakistan’s second innings, before Bilal Asif came in as a night-watchman, which is always dangerous, and he was caught for no score by Head, Nathan Lyon the bowler.
Azhar Ali came in at four and was out LBW after a review on what turned out to be the final ball of the day to Jon Holland.
After controlling the second session, Pakistan would be less than thrilled with that finish to the day. Still, they lead by 325 and are in a good position to get a favourable result.
It will be another long day in the field for Australia. A draw seems unlikely at the moment with Pakistan well and truly on top in this first test. A win for Australia? Well, that would be a miracle and would require more than the opening batsmen to show up.
