The Super 12 portion of the 2022 T20 World Cup continues tonight, when Pakistan takes on South Africa at the SCG in Sydney. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 7.00pm (AEDT).
Before this T20 World Cup began, South Africa weren’t one of the favoured sides. Yet, with two pool matches remaining, they look almost certain to qualify. A win over Pakistan would just about sew up a finals spot.
The same can’t be said for Pakistan. Coming into the tournament, their much-lauded pace attack was expected to fire on Australian wickets and Babar Azam was expected to get amongst the runs.
Azam has scored just the 8 runs across three innings and the pace attack hasn’t had the impact we thought they might.
Yet, all may have been different if they got over the line against India first up. Pakistan looked in control until Virat Kohli put on a masterclass.
Conversely, South Africa’s high standing in the group has come off a win against India. Aiden Markram and David Miller both posted half centuries for South Africa as they chased down the Indian total of 133.
Only Suryakumar Yadav offered any resistance reaching 68, but the likes of Wayne Parnell and Lungi Ngidi blasted his teammates out one after the other.
South Africa may have been underrated to start this tournament, but they certainly aren’t now.
Prediction
Pakistan are a bit of an enigma and are more than capable tonight of coming out and stalling the South African charge.
On a wicket in Sydney that is likely to do a bit, I think this will be a low-scoring game.
I’m leaning towards South Africa given their recent form, but this is a toin coss.
South Africa by five runs or two wickets.
