The Perth Scorchers will face the Adelaide Strikers in the ninth game of the Big Bash Lseason, with both teams having played two matches so far. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 7:45pm (AEDT).

It’s not the first time in the Big Bash League that the Scorchers have been in early trouble.

It’s been their tenacity that has often seen them claw back from the face of adversity and go on to make it to the BBL finals that regularly.

But their talismanic coach Justin Langer is no longer with them, and the onus will be on Adam Voges to turn things around after having lost two matches in a row.

What would come as good news is that this is the first season in which each team plays 14 matches, so the road to recovery has more leeway and allows some slip-ups if the team knows how to turn things around.

The Scorchers will also be playing their first home game of the season, which should fill them up with confidence.

The big question, however, is whether they should bat or bowl first – because they have lost matches doing both.

In their season-opener, the Scorchers were bowled out for 103 and, while the Renegades lost six wickets, they made it to the target in the 16th over.

It was followed by a chase that was derailed by the Sydney Sixers, who broke the Scorchers back in the first three overs of their innings.

Despite captain Ashton Turner and Hilton Cartwright adding 99 for the fourth wicket, they were left with a lot to do in the final five and went down by 17 runs.

The Strikers kickstarted the defence of their title with a five-wicket win over Brisbane Heat thanks to Rashid Khan’s heroics but what would worry them is the way the Renegades chased down 176 in their next game.

Rashid grabbed a 2/13 from his four overs in that match too, but Melbourne recovered from 5/82 to win that game by scoring a whopping 163 runs in the remaining 15.1 overs.

This is a tactic a lot of teams might look to use – to play Rashid cautiously and attack the likes of Billy Stanlake, Michael Neser and Ben Laughlin.

Prediction
Scorchers to edge out Strikers in a close encounter.
