The BBL continues tonight when the Perth Scorchers take on the Brisbane Heat in the Challenger at Manuka Oval in Canberra. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match, starting from 7:40pm (AEDT).
Well, the business end has arrived, and we couldn’t get a more intriguing match-up in the Challenger than a clash between these two teams.
Seen by many as the favourites leading into the season, the Scorchers were certainly living up to that tag leading into the last round. But losses to Brisbane at Adelaide Oval and then to the Sixers in the Qualifier has the Scorchers firmly on the precipice tonight.
Against the Sixers, despite Josh Inglis’ best efforts, a steady loss of wickets restricted the Scorchers to a total that was very chaseable. The Scorchers will be hoping for more from their batting imports and Jason Roy does loom as a big danger for the Heat.
The Scorchers bowling line up struggled to penetrate the batting on a flat Manuka Oval wicket and, due to COVID restrictions, they will ‘host’ the Challenger at the same ground.
The Brisbane Heat barely squeaked into the BBL finals but, once they got there, have looked very comfortable indeed.
Marnus Labuschagne and Joe Denly have added some stability at the top, creating a nice foil for Chris Lynn and Sam Heazlett. Jimmy Peirson has also been so consistent in the middle order and rescued the Heat on a number of occasions.
Labuschagne and Mitch Swepson’s return to the Heat set-up have added real variety to Brisbane’s attack and, on an aging Manuka wicket, leg-spin could play a big role. Of course, the Scorchers also have Fawad Ahmed.
Prediction
Momentum is a big thing in sport.
Had the Scorchers been able to host this one at Optus Stadium, I would have tipped a Scorchers win.
However, we are now playing this in Canberra and the Heat are coming off a last-start win at the same venue.
I’m going for the upset.
Heat by 20 runs or three wickets.
