The Melbourne Stars will look to move one step closer to the BBL finals when they travel west to take on the struggling Perth Scorchers in the Sunday night clash. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 9:15pm (AEDT).
The Melbourne-based outfit still have plenty to play for in this game, with their finals hopes still alive, and a win here almost securing things for them.
With players like Marcus Stoinis and Glenn Maxwell in the side, it’s no surprise they have performed well, but after last year’s debacle and some weaknesses throughout the team, there was still the ‘what if’ factor.
Instead, they are fourth with six wins from their 11 games and performing well, coming off a win over the Brisbane Heat a week ago in their last contest. They bowled extremely well there, and will need to do so here on a green deck against the Scorchers.
A lot of their best work with the ball has come from Dwayne Bravo and Marcus Stoinis bowling slower balls and varying things though, and if the pitch at Optus Stadium plays like it has, that could be their downfall.
This is a pitch which favours genuine pace and bounce, making life tough for batsmen. It’s not as bad as it was earlier in the season, but it’ll suit the quicks, and for that reason the pressure is on Liam Plunkett, Daniel Worrall and the re-called Jackson Coleman.
If their bowlers do the job, then it’ll be down to the Scorchers bowlers to do the restricting.
With Jason Behrendroff and Nathan Coulter-Nile in the attack, Perth’s strength should have been the bowlers this season, but in truth, they haven’t really had a strength.
Stumbling from loss to loss, including a bad one in Brisbane a couple of nights ago, their season is over and they have nothing left to play for in front of their home fans.
Michael Klinger is also back for what will be his final BBL game in Perth, so he could be in for some runs, but other than that, the Scorchers have had, and probably will have, very little to cheer about given the weapons the Stars have in their side.
Prediction
The Scorchers are probably going to be no match for a Stars side who are in reasonable form and just about at full strength for the trip west. I’d expect the Melbourne side with everything to play for to take the win.
