The Perth Scorchers face the Sydney Sixers in a must-win match for both sides at Optus Stadium. Join The Roar for live scores and commentary from 7:10pm (AEDT).
It has been something of a slow start to the season for both the Scorchers and the Sixers; near the bottom rung of the ladder and in danger of occupying it should they suffer a loss in this match today. The Sydney-based team comes into the clash off two straight losses and the men from the west were towelled up comprehensively by the Strikers just three days ago in Adelaide.
It sets up an intriguing and desperate clash with the road ahead potentially all too difficult for the loser and the winner moving temporarily inside the top four.
For the Scorchers, middle order batting has been an issue. The all-round skills of Cameron Green, Ashton Agar and Mitchell Marsh have at times been given a platform, yet they have failed to seal the deal with astute decision making through the middle overs.
The Sydney side looks strong and has underperformed thus far this season. If Daniel Hughes and James Vince do provide a consistent launching pad for the likes of Jordan Silk to capitalise on, the Sixers could become a force in BBL09.
With the exciting young Josh Phillippe looking like a long term star of the competition, as well as a deep and experienced bowling attack featuring Tom Curran and Moises Henriques, the Sixers will feel they are still a real chance at challenging for the title should they be able to reverse their recent flat form line.
Prediction
With a true sense of desperation pervading this game, we could be in for a classic encounter. With 381 runs scored in the previous Optus Stadium clash between the Scorchers and the Renegades, runs should be aplenty and the home ground advantage might just be enough to get the Scorchers across the line in a tight one.
Runs on the board could be key once again, with chasing sides struggling this season with composure and execution at times.
