The Perth Scorchers will aim to flip the script on their struggling Big Bash League season when they return home for a clash with the Sydney Sixers in the late Sunday game. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 9:35pm (AEDT).
It’s fair to say the Scorchers season thus far has been nothing short of a disaster.
Even halfway through the eighth instalment of the competition, there is a very real danger that unless the Scorchers are almost perfect from here on out, they will miss the final four for the first time in franchise history.
As it stands currently, the Scorchers sit bottom of the table with just two wins from their seven games. Taking from the principle of about eight wins to make the finals, they may well need to win six of their last seven to make the semi-finals.
While they managed to turn their horrendous form around four days ago with a crucial win over the Melbourne Stars on the road, things aren’t about to get any easier with Jhye Richardson, Jason Behrendorff and Mitchell Marsh all out to international duty, leaving the squad youthful and inexperienced.
On the other side of the coin, the Sixers have exceeded expectations this season. Widely tipped to finish at the bottom of the table come the end of the season, they have picked up some big wins with lesser lights standing up to do the damage.
The form of Jordan Silk and Daniel Hughes with the back has been phenomenal, while the attack has stood up when it’s needed to, and Moises Henriques has led the way well.
They are going to need more if they harbour ambitions of winning the competition, but still, the signs are positive for the men in magenta.
Winning four of their seven games, the Sixers sit in fourth spot on the ladder and pulled off a shock win over the Adelaide Strikers, so will enter this one with plenty of confidence.
Prediction
The Scorchers are weakened by their international players being out, but also will be desperate for a win. At home and against a Sixers side, who, while shooting above expectations, don’t look anything too tough to handle on paper, the Scorchers should pick up a crucial victory.
