The summer of cricket has arrived, with the JLT one-day cup set to get things going in Townsville as Queensland and Victoria square off in the opening match. Join The Roar for live scores and coverage from 10am (AEST).
The Bulls come into the new summer aiming to perform on a much higher level than they did 12 months ago.
With the new competition format, all teams will make the finals, but finishing outside the top two leaves teams under a heavy disadvantage, given they will have to play an extra knockout game just to face either of the top two teams.
While none of the Test players will participate in the JLT Cup, Victoria will have Glenn Maxwell in their side.
He has been controversially overlooked for Australia’s trip to the UAE to play Pakistan, but will hand the Victorians a huge boost in this competition.
He is joined in a strong batting order by former New South Wales Blues batsman Nic Maddinson who will be out to get his career back on track, while Peter Handscomb, Scott Boland, Cameron White, Aussie bolter Chris Tremain and youngster Will Sutherland also all appear in the squad.
It’s little surprise the Victorian side are tournament favourites with talent littered all the way across their side.
Queensland themselves have named a handy squad, albeit one gutted by Test selection as they lose Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne and Brendan Doggett.
They welcome back one of the biggest hitting batsmen in Australian cricket, Chris Lynn, who will captain the side throughout the tournament. The experience of Joe Burns will also be welcomed at the top of the batting order.
It’s their attack where they will be able to make the biggest inroads into other strong sides though, with Mark Steketee, Mitch Swepson and Australian limited overs quick Billy Stanlake all in the squad.
If they can’t keep the strong Victorian batting order to a lower score though, they will be in all sorts because the depth in their batting simply isn’t there.
Prediction
Victoria, on paper, are the strongest side coming into this tournament. With Boland and Tremain leading their attack in conditions which could allow for the ball to hoop around a little bit, they should well and truly have the edge with both bat and ball here.
Victoria pretty comfortably.
