South Africa and Afghanistan will meet in Cardiff today, with both sides looking to secure a first victory for the 2019 World Cup. Join The Roar for live scores and a blog of the match, starting from 10:30pm (AEST).
Nothing has gone right for South Africa so far. Perhaps losing Dale Steyn to injury fairly early on was a sign of things to come, but even without him, many did expect a better showing from Faf du Plessis’ side.
After four games, they have only accumulated the one-point, which was awarded to them as there was no result in their previous clash against the West Indies at The Rose Bowl.
It was not looking good for them in the few overs they played, as South Africa fell to 2-29 off 7.3 overs. It would be fair to say the West Indies were on track for a potential victory.
As for Afghanistan, no one really expected anything from them at this World Cup, but they would be disappointed to have not won a game from the three they have played.
They were poor in the previous clash, where they faced New Zealand in Taunton. Afghanistan batted first, but were only able to put 172 runs on the board.
Hashmatullah Shahidi was the shining light, as he scored 59 runs from 99 balls, showing patience and technique right throughout that particular innings.
New Zealand were able to chase the score only three wickets down in 32.1 overs. Aftab Alab took all three of the wickets for Afghanistan.
In regards to the clash between South Africa and Afghanistan, there is talk there could be some rain today in Cardiff, which should come as no surprise, as there has been rain right across England and Wales for the past week.
Prediction
If the rain stays away, then it should be a routine victory for South Africa. They are clearly the better side.
South Africa to prevail.
