The Australian men’s cricket team are back in action for the first time since January, taking on the Proteas in the first of three T20s in South Africa. Join The Roar for live scores from 3am (AEDT).

It’s been a long time between Twenty20 drinks for Australia, who haven’t played in the shortest format since comfortably dispatching of Sri Lanka and Pakistan last year.

Aaron Finch, David Warner and Steve Smith were phenomenal in those two series, leading a dominant top-order performance to crush their opponents.

South Africa, though, have no such match practice issues, coming in fresh off a three-match T20 series against England, one which they lost 2-1.

That encounter was a high-scoring affair, with a run rate of over 10rpo for the entire three matches. Quinton de Kock was in excellent form for the Proteas at the top of the order, but despite an excellent death bowling effort in the opening fixture, particularly from Lungi Ngidi, the attack was lacking.

On the small, traditionally batsman-friendly grounds, we can expect another high-scoring series, even more so given it begins today in the tiny confines of the Wanderers in Johannesburg.

Prediction
Whichever attack is able to make early in-roads will give their side a significant advantage. Australia were able to do that consistently when they were last playing T20s, and will fancy their chances of doing so again.

With no Glenn Maxwell, the middle order looks vulnerable for the tourists. But with South Africa going through some upheaval – Faf du Plessis has recently stood down as captain – and Australia having won their last seven matches in the format, Aaron Finch’s side should be good enough to begin this series with a win.

What an absolute peach from Starc to get De Kock. That sort of a delivery mentally destroys the opposition batting order.

Just watched the replay, what an emphatic win by the Aussies. Congrats to Agar for his 5 for 24 including a hat trick. Young Carey looks the goods. For the Saffers, 2 embarrassing fielding blemishes including erratic bowling bled many boundaries did not help their cause. This Aussie team can only get better.
