With the series squared at 1-1, Australia head to Cape Town for the series decider against South Africa looking for their fourth consecutive T20I series win. Join The Roar for live scores from 3am (AEDT).
After dismantling the Proteas by a whopping 107 runs in Game 1 to make it nine consecutive T20s without defeat, few would have predicted the Aussies to crash back to earth so quickly.
But despite needing just 35 off 28 balls for victory in the second game in Port Elizabeth with wickets aplenty in hand, the home side wrestled their way back into the series thanks to some superb death bowling and some ordinary batting.
Aside from David Warner’s half-century, no other Australian made a score of note for the match, and with the team still searching for a quality finisher in the lead-up to this year’s home T20 World Cup, disappointing efforts from Mitch Marsh (6 off 8 balls) and Matthew Wade (1 off 2) at the death are particularly concerning.
Given the decider is in Cape Town, where of course the infamous ball-tampering saga was first unearthed back in 2018, you’d expect an even more hostile reception for the visitors than in their previous two matches.
Prediction
Despite losing in Port Elizabeth, there’s no question the Aussies are a better side than the Proteas. They thrashed them mercilessly with both bat and ball in Game 1 in Johannesburg, and really had the better of much of their match in the second game as well.
Expect the Proteas to fight it out to the end, but it’s hard to imagine an impressive-looking Australian batting line-up to crumble so spectacularly twice in a row.
Join The Roar from 3am (AEDT) for live scores as we find out who takes out the series.
