Quinton de Kock is back for South Africa as they look to keep their T20 World Cup semi-final hopes alive against Sri Lanka in Sharjah. Join The Roar for live scores from 9pm (AEDT).
After dominating headlines and discussion for days following his withdrawal from the Proteas team over their mandatory ‘take a knee’ pre-match gesture, star wicketkeeper-batsman de Kock returns at the perfect time. Even without him, Temba Bavuma’s team got the job done against the West Indies to square the ledger at a win and a loss for the tournament, with batsman Aiden Markram in scintillating form.
While de Kock failed with the bat in the Proteas’ loss to Australia, there’s no question he makes them a better side at the top of the order. If they are to make it to the final four, it will likely be him leading the way.
Sri Lanka’s flawless World Cup qualifying run continued with a group stage win over Bangladesh, but their good form finally came crashing down against Australia. They did plenty right – number three batsman Charith Asalanka looks a star in the making, while spin twins Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana could have been deadly had they had some scoreboard pressure to defend. But their fast bowling is a serious weakness, as was their middle-overs collapse from 1/78 to 5/94 that saw them finish well short of a par score.
Nevertheless, the Lankans have won both their matches in Sharjah to date, including bowling the Netherlands out for an ugly 44. The wicket is conducive to spin, and if Theekshana and Hasaranga can outperform opposite duo Keshav Maharaj and Tabraiz Shamsi, Sri Lanka’s dreams of a fairytale run to the semi-finals could well be back on track.
